While there is no official list of netiquette rules or guidelines, the general idea is to respect others online. Below are our examples of rules to follow for good netiquette:
- Keep The Human Aspect in Mind. If you wouldn’t do or say something in real life, don’t do it online either.
- Avoid posting inflammatory or offensive comments online. Respect the opinions of your community. If you feel the need to disagree, do so respectfully and acknowledge the valid points in your group member argument. Acknowledge that others are entitled to have their own perspective on the issue.
- Respect others’ privacy by not sharing personal information, photos, or videos that another person may not want published online.
- Don’t troll people by repeatedly nagging or annoying them. Don’t write anything that sounds angry or sarcastic, even as a joke, because without hearing your tone of voice, your peers might not realize you’re joking.
- Stick to the topic when posting or when commenting on photos or videos.
Be brief. If you write a long dissertation in response to a simple question, it’s unlikely that anyone will spend the time to read through it all. - If someone asks a question and you know the answer, offer to help.
